Now Entering the Crunchy Zone

So Jen offered to go shopping with me at Kimberton Whole Foods, but today on a whim I thought I'd drop by there and pick up a few things on my way home from the gym. First of all, it was not where I thought it was, so I had to explore a bit, but I have a good sense of direction so I found it. I had never actually been into "downtown" Kimberton, but it is a CUTE place. Different...lots of healthy, earthy businesses. Like a wellness center, massage therapy, handmade jewelry...that kinda thing. But going with Nathan, without a list, and without Jen for the first time was a BAD idea.

I was totally overwhelmed by all the crazy brands and packaging and stuff I didn't recognize. It's so much harder to make choices when you don't even know the brands. And WHOA is it expensive. So I will NOT being buying my meat or produce there. I'll have to try Trader Joes next. I got a kick out of all the crunchy people shopping there. First, they all seemed to know each other! And they were all dressed like hippy nature types.

Anyway, I got some Red Hot and Blue chips because I've had them before and they are TASTY. But not especially low cal or anything. And some soft cheese to spread on crackers, and some cranberry juice. It took me awhile to find the kind of tea Jen recommended for iced tea, but I asked someone and they helped. I made some this afternoon and while I have not had any yet, it smells delicious! I may have steeped it too long...

I also bought that cinnamin raisen Ezekial bread. So my question is, the stuff comes frozen because it doesn't have the preservatives in it. Must you store it frozen if you don't use it up quickly? Then how do you thaw it nicely for sandwiches? This may be a silly question but I've never put bread in my freezer.

I can imagine feeling overwhelmed in an unfamiliar environment. I've never mustered up the courage to go into the Whole Foods or Wild Oats stores here.

obviously you don't remember playing Kimberton in sports. The whole town is a bunch of leftover hippies.

well, i'm glad that you ventured into kimberton. it's a great place, honestly, but it does take some getting used to. :)

i often tell people that when transitioning to whole foods, the biggest thing will be sticker shock--and so learning how to transition is important.

on the one hand, i highly recommend that people transition their meats and dairy first--as these not only impact human health (quality of product), but also the quality of life for the animals who lived and died for our tables. but, the sticker shock is great so sometimes it's easier to start with vegetables and smaller items rather than going for the gusto financially.

I should point out that our highest bill, aside from our house payment, is our monthly food bill. But, our medical bills are non existant. We do not have any OTC or prescription medicines here, nor vitamins or any sort. The money that we save on medicine, doctors visits, etc, is a life-long savings too when one eats healthy foods.

Let me know next time you want to go. We'll plan before hand. It's helpful to plan your menus first, and then buy what you need.

And we shop at TJs and KWF because we can get better deals on 'this' over here and better deals on 'that' over there.

In regards to the bread. If you're going to eat it quickly, simply refridgerate it. If you're going to eat it slowly, then break the loaf. Put 1/2 the loaf in the fridge and 1/2 the loaf in the freezer. When you get 1/4 through the fridge loaf, transfer down 1/4 from the freezer.

we eat ours quickly enough--we keep it in the fridge. It'll keep well enough there. when i want a sandwich for lunch, i take the bread out in the morning, cover it, and set it on the counter so that it's room temp.
